What Lantern is

Lantern is software your computer repair shop installs so you can reach them easily, and so they can spot problems worth a conversation. It is not remote access: the shop cannot see your screen, open your files, or control your computer through it.

What the software sends to your shop

Roughly every four hours the software sends:

  • That the computer is still running Lantern
  • Basic information about the computer: its name, operating system and version, processor, memory, the size and free space of the main drive, the form factor (laptop or desktop), the name of the account last signed in, and which antivirus products are present
  • The results of the checks your shop has enabled: for example whether the drive is nearly full, or whether antivirus is running

When you click Request Service, it also sends whatever you typed into that form: your name, phone, email and message, and a screenshot only if you chose to attach one.

What it does not send

  • The contents of your files, documents, photos or email
  • What you type, or which websites you visit
  • Your screen, unless you explicitly attach a screenshot to a request
  • Passwords or payment details

Who can see it

Only the repair shop that installed Lantern on this computer, and Sacramento Labs as the provider of the software. It is not sold, and it is not shared with advertisers.

Removing it

Ask your shop to remove the device from their dashboard and the software will uninstall itself the next time it checks in. You can also uninstall it yourself at any time.
